Add bookmarks to a PDF
Give a long PDF a clickable table of contents. Bookmarks appear in the side panel of a PDF reader and jump straight to a chapter. Add them page by page, paste a whole list, or edit the bookmarks the file already has.
How to do it
- Drop your PDF on the page, or press «Choose file».
- Tap a page to bookmark it and type the title. Or press «Paste a list» and paste lines such as 3 Chapter 1.
- Use «Make it a section» to put an entry under the chapter above it.
- Press «Save bookmarks», then «Save».
Good to know
- For a textbook or a long report, copy the contents page into «Paste a list»: one line per entry, with the page number and the title. Two spaces or a hyphen in front make a line a section.
- Use the position of the page in the PDF, not the number printed on it. If the book's page 1 is the 15th page of the file, the bookmark should point to 15. Tapping the page itself avoids the mistake.
- If the PDF already has bookmarks, they are loaded when you open it, so you can rename, move or remove single entries without starting again.
Questions
How do I add a table of contents to a PDF?
Open the PDF here, add one bookmark for each chapter and save. The contents list then shows in the bookmarks or outline panel of PDF readers and browsers, and each entry jumps to its page.
How do I edit or remove the bookmarks in a PDF?
Open the file and its existing bookmarks appear in the list. Change a title or a page, delete an entry, or press «Remove all» to clear them, then save.
Do bookmarks change the pages of my PDF?
No. Bookmarks are only a list of links stored in the file. The pages look and print exactly as before, and your original file is not changed.
